Response to media query by Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in New Zealand on Hong Kong issue

Q: Recently, New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters issued a media statement expressing concern over arrests of people by Hong Kong police for organizing and participating in unlawful assemblies. What is your comment?

A: China’s Hong Kong Special Administration Region upholds the rule of law. Hong Kong police carry out their duties and law-enforcement activities in accordance with law. No one is above the law. That is the basic principle any law-based society should follow. Hong Kong is a part of China, and its affairs are entirely domestic affairs of China which brook no foreign interference. We urge the New Zealand side to earnestly respect Hong Kong's rule of law, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs.
