Chinese Consul General Wang Zhijian attends a meeting with families of victims of the CTV building collapse in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake

On February 15, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern met with families of those killed in Christchurch's CTV building collapse in the 2011 earthquake. Mr Wang Zhijian, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Christchurch, attended the meeting on behalf of Chinese Embassy and Consulates in New Zealand.

At the meeting, Consul General Wang expressed the concerns of the Chinese side to Prime Minister Ardern and conveyed the regrets of some families of Chinese victims regarding the New Zealand Police's decision not to pursue criminal charges against the personnel involved in this case. Consul General Wang called for the New Zealand Government to conduct a comprehensive investigation in order to ascertain who is responsible for this tragedy, and requested the New Zealand side to provide help and facilitation to the families of victims that wish to come to New Zealand to mourn their deceased ones, such as assisting them to apply for the visa.

The Chinese Embassy and Consulates in New Zealand will continue to communicate and coordinate with all parties concerned and provide necessary assistance to the Chinese families of the victims to protect their rights by law.
