On February 17, 2018, the 'Happy Chinese New Year' celebration kicked off at the Michael Fowler Center in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. The event was organized by the Wellington City Council, the Asian Events Trust and the China Cultural Centre in New Zealand. The celebration mainly featured a gala performance, a Spring Festival fair, a food court with a variety of Chinese delicacies and a street parade. The celebration activities started at 11:00am at the Michael Fowler Center and attracted large crowds of enthusiastic participants.

In the evening, Charge d'affaires Qu Guangzhou, the Wellington City Ambassador Simon Woolf and the Director of the China Culture Centre in New Zealand Guo Guangzong, attended the gala performance and delivered speeches.

In his speech, Charge d'affaires Qu Guangzhou extended his festival greetings to the overseas Chinese. He noted that relations between China and New Zealand are progressing well with an increase in cultural exchanges, a deepening of mutual trust in politics and closer economic ties. Grand celebrations of the Chinese New Year, such as the 'Happy Chinese New Year' event, will play an important role in deepening mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and further advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. He sincerely thanked the Overseas Chinese community for their ongoing contribution to promoting friendship between China and New Zealand. Mr Qu wished all the audience a happy and prosperous year in the 'Year of Dog.

The evening performance comprised a fusion of Chinese-Western traditional and contemporary song and dance. Visiting performers from the Heilongjiang Art Troupe in Northeastern China (dispatched by the Ministry for Culture of China) joined local artists, including a Maori Kapa Haka group and dancers, to stage a wonderful, exciting and culturally rich show. The performances were rewarded with rounds of applause from an appreciative audience, driving the 'Happy Chinese New Year' celebration to a climax.

The evening finished with a wonderful fireworks display put on by the event organizers to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
