Chief of the New Zealand Defense Force pays a visit to China

From August 14th to 15th, 2017, Lieutenant General Timothy Keating, Chief of the New Zealand Defense Force, paid a successful visit to China.

On August 14, General Fan Changlong, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, met with Lieutenant General Keating in Beijing. Gen. Fan Changlong noted that, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand 45 years ago, bilateral relations have maintained a sound development momentum. In particular, during the successful state visit by President Xi Jinping to New Zealand in 2014, the two sides had decided to upgrade China - New Zealand relations into a comprehensive strategic partnership, fast tracking the development of bilateral relations. In recent years, relations between the two militaries have been progressing well with positive results achieved in the fields of high-level visits, strategic dialogue, joint exercises and drills. China is willing to work with New Zealand to actively explore new areas of exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries to gain greater results.

Lieutenant General Keating noted that New Zealand and China are good friends and partners with a close friendship. In recent years, with the support of the leaders of the two countries, bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the fields of politics, economy and military have been further advanced. New Zealand hopes that China could play a greater role in international relations and is willing to work with China to safeguard world and regional peace and stability by further strengthening dialogue, enhancing trust and deepening pragmatic cooperation in various fields.

Gen. Fan Changlong also briefed Lieutenant General Keating on the status of China's national defense and military reforms. Also present at the meeting was Major General Shao Yuanming, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission (CMC).
