On May 16 – 17, 2016, the Tripartite Economic Alliance Summit for Auckland, Guangzhou and Los Angeles was held in Auckland. The Mayor of the host city Auckland Mr Len Brown presided over the opening ceremony. Over 600 representatives from the political, business and cultural communities from the three sister cities attended the event. Ms. Li Xiaolin, the President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Wang Dong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou and Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles Mayor delivered speeches. Chinese Ambassador Mr. Wang Lutong and Consul General in Auckland Ms. Xu Erwen attended the activities.

The theme of the summit was 'to create connections' focusing on five major areas – high-value food including health and nutrition; advanced materials including composites; new media, entertainment and digital business; smart data; and urban planning.

All parties noted that Auckland, Guangzhou and Los Angeles were vibrant cities facing common issues including transportation, housing, infrastructure and air pollution. Through the tripartite economic alliance platform, the cities could enhance communication and exchanges, and share successful experiences to further expand economic and trade relations between the three cities, with innovation as the focus.
