On September 23, 2016, a commemorative event was held in Wellington to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu and English poet and playwright William Shakespeare. Political Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand, Mr. Qu Guangzhou attended the activity and delivered a speech. The commemorative event had the theme of‘ Dialog Across Time and Space –Homage on the 400 Anniversary of the death of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare’ and was co-sponsored by the China Cultural Center in New Zealand, the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation and the Confucius Institute at Victoria University, Wellington.

In his speech，Counselor Qu noted that cultural exchange is an important component of the China - New Zealand friendship. 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Tang Xianzu and Shakespeare. The commemorative activity provided a good platform to remember the Chinese and English literary masters and would help the local audience learn more about Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu and the Chinese theatrical art. It is of great significance in the promotion of cultural exchanges and friendship between the two countries.

The commemorative event featured a photo exhibition, theatrical costumes display, professional lectures, theater appreciation and VR shows of classic plays, all aimed at honoring the achievements of these two ancient literary masters of the east and west lived in the same period of time. This activity was also an opportunity for the promotion of the fine traditional Chinese culture. The event was chaired by Dr. Luo Hui, Director of the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation. Director of the China Cultural Center in New Zealand, Mr.Guo Zongguang, delivered a speech on behalf of the sponsors. Over 180 guests participated in the activity, including Chairman of the Victoria University of Wellington Confucius Institute and former ambassador to China, Mr.Tony Browne, and Director of the Confucius Institute, Ms. Wen Chin Powles.
