Wang Yi Meets with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh of Vietnam

On December 15, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh of Vietnam during his attendance at the 3rd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Dali, Yunnan.

Wang Yi expressed that General Secretary and President Xi Jinping chose Vietnam as the first country to visit after the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), indicating that China pays high attention to the relations between China and Vietnam as well as that between the CPC and the Communist Party of Vietnam. Leaders of both parties and both countries paid historical visits to each other in 2017 and reached a series of important consensus, which charted the course for the development of China-Vietnam relations. Both sides should take this opportunity and ride the tide, truly cultivate and enhance mutual trust, so as to accelerate the development of connectivity and cooperation in all fields. We should manage the maritime situation properly and expand maritime cooperation, so that China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership can constantly gain further development.

Pham Binh Minh expressed that 2017 is a special year for Vietnam-China relations. Leaders of both parties and both countries realized mutual visits within this year, which is of great significance for strengthening strategic communication between both sides, enhancing political mutual trust, promoting economic and investment cooperation, managing and resolving divergence. Vietnam is willing to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges between both sides and propel cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, agriculture, environment, investment, and climate change.

Wang Yi pointed out that the LMC is a new sub-regional cooperation platform specially established for the six countries in the basin, which is in line with the six countries’ common wishes of strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation. Being efficient and practical as well as attaching importance to people’s livelihood, the LMC has brought tangible benefits to the countries and people in this region. China expects Vietnam to play a more active role in promoting the LMC towards the goal of building a community of shared future among Lancang-Mekong countries.

Pham Binh Minh said that Vietnam has always attached importance to the LMC and taken an active part in it. Vietnam stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China and the countries along the rivers and make contributions to peace and prosperity in the region, in a bid to ensure the 2nd LMC Leaders' Meeting in 2018 a success.
