2017/12/15

On December 15, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand during his attendance at the 3rd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Dali, Yunnan.

Wang Yi expressed that China and Thailand have maintained stable relations and constantly deepened practical cooperation. The full commencement ceremony of China-Thailand railway cooperation project is going to be launched. China is willing to make joint efforts with Thailand to promote greater development of China-Thailand relations in the new era, and strengthen the docking between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Thailand’s 4.0 and the Eastern Economic Corridor and other development strategies, so as to promote the smooth implementation of China-Thailand railway cooperation project.

Don Pramudwinai noted that China-Thailand relations are firm. The Thailand-China railway is going to start soon, which will be the first railway jointly built by the two countries for Thailand in the past 100 years. The railway will boost Thailand’s transportation development. The Thai people pay high attention to the railway and look forward to the early completion of it. The Thailand-China railway will be the extension of the “Belt and Road” construction and will better connect China and Southeast Asian countries.

Wang Yi expressed that Thailand is the initiator of the LMC and has made great contributions to it. China and Thailand have kept tacit cooperation with each other during the advancement of the LMC, obtaining remarkable achievements. The LMC will not affect or replace other cooperation mechanisms in the region. The LMC and other cooperation mechanisms should play their own role and promote the development of each other to jointly advance the regional integration process. China is ready to, together with all parties including Thailand, push the LMC from nurturing period into the growing period.

Don Pramudwinai expressed that it is the common aspirations of all parties to promote the 3rd LMC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting for positive outcomes. In the past one and a half years since the mechanism was launched, cooperation in various fields has been developed rapidly with more than 250 cooperation projects approved scoring the most fruitful results of the cooperation mechanisms in the river basin. Thailand will be more actively involved in the mechanism cooperation and support the construction of the Lancang-Mekong economic development belt.
