It is reported recently that NIWA, a research institution of New Zealand suffered hacker attacks from a Chinese IP address. At the post-cabinet press conference on 26 May, Prime Minister John Key made it very clear when asked by journalists that “the IP address in this particular case was China, although that doesn’t mean at all it’s from a Chinese entity”. We appreciate such objective remarks.

China has always firmly opposed to and combatted cyber criminal acts including network intrusion, cyber theft and destruction of network system security. The recent cyber-attacks on NIWA have nothing to do with the Chinese Government, nor have any connection with Chinese citizens. The facts unveiled in recent years indicate that China is one of the main victims of cyber-attacks.

Internet hacking and other forms of cyber-attacks are a global problem which are cross-border and anonymous. Constructive efforts of international community on the basis of mutual trust and respect are indispensable to deal with them. China is willing to enhance dialogue and cooperation with New Zealand and other relevant parties to jointly combat internet hacking and other cyber criminal acts, uphold and promote international network security.
